This course introduces student to the principles, concepts and theories of policy formation and planning by taking them through the historical context of planning and its evolution to date. The link between policy and planning is also established and the policy formulation and planning process are evaluated. Students will gain insight into destination planning and site planning along with planning at the international, regional and national levels. Tourism planning for rural, urban and industrial areas is assessed and finally the importance of tourism planning in the context of sustainable development is addressed.
